Burmese Canadian Network Joint Statement on the Myanmar Crisis

On February 1, 2021, early morning, Myanmar’s military detained our democratically elected leaders including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint, other senior figures from the governing party, and many other pro-democracy leaders.

The people of Myanmar have spoken at the polls in 2015 and again in 2020 to establish a democratic nation after languishing under an oppressive military dictatorship for 52 years. It is critical that Canada and the world rally around the people of Myanmar.

Recently, the military has released the criminals from prisons and paid them to commit all kinds of criminal activities like beating, looting, putting some houses on fire and other forms of violence to suppress peaceful demonstrations.

The situation in Burma is getting worse day by day. Please help save our country. We are counting on Canada.

We urge the Government of Canada:

1. To demand a swift release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all arrested individuals.

2. To reject any appointments made by the Illegal military government. 

3.  To recognize the result of the November 8, 2020 general election.

4. To impose stringent economic sanctions on the military owned businesses in Myanmar and abroad.

5. We are grateful to Canada for acting with the United Kingdom to impose sanctions on nine members of the Myanmar military under the Special Economic Measures Act. We urge Canada to expand these measures and also use the Magnitsky Act to further strengthen these sanctions. 

6. We respectfully request a meeting with Global Affairs as soon as possible to share our views.

We Stand with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for Peace in Myanmar

1.This is the Time of Crisis. There is only One People,One Leader, One Army At this moment. This is the chance to Unite All. We Stand for our Country, Our Nation and Our Leader who needs all the support  at her very difficult time when she has been unfairly criticized by the whole international community.

2. These responsibility falls primarily on Government of Myanmar and Myanmar Army Authorities. It also requires the commitment of people inside and outside the country including Myanmar people living in Canada. We need to give full support to the Government of Myanmar led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and we need to promote awareness among all Canadians about the truth behind all these violence, atrocities and thousands of innocent women, elders and children displaced from their homes on both sides.

 3.  We condemn the attack on securities forces of August 25th along northern border stations. We fully support the action taken by the Government of Myanmar in assuring police and security forces in Rakhine State to protect all residents in the area.

4.Burmese Canadian Network is Nothing against race or religion; we have concerns for all innocent civilians  But We Strongly condemn the terrorism, extremism and violence; also fabricated news. 

5. Burmese Canadian Network Concerns the fact that we are small minority community in Canada Vs. large Muslim Community in Canada (same thing in Northern Rakhine State with ethnic nationalities Rakhine, Mro, Dinet, Hindi are minorities total 70,000 population; Muslims are majority in that region with over 800,000)

6.Burmese Canadian Network issues this Statement because of we are mostly voiceless minority community similar to voiceless forgotten minority Non-Muslim native ethnic nationalities (Rakhine, Mro, Dinet, Hindi) in Northern Rakhine State in Mynmar.

က်မတို႔ပတ္ဝန္းက်င္တြင္ တစ္ခါတရံ၌ အရက္ႏွင့္ပတ္သက္၍ ကြဲျပားျခားနားေသာ ထင္ျမင္ခ်က္မ်ားကို ၾကားရေလ့ရွိသည္ ။
တခ်ိဳ႕ကအရက္ေသာက္ျခင္းကို လူမႈေရးဟုေခါင္းစဥ္တပ္သည္ ။ တခ်ိဳ႕က သူငယ္ခ်င္းအခ်င္းခ်င္းအရက္ေသာက္၍စကားေျပာဆိုျခင္း က ပို၍ရင္းႏွီးခ်စ္ခင္ အကၽြမ္းတဝင္ျဖစ္ေစသည္ဟုဆိုသည္ ။ တစ္ခါတေလပါပဲ ဘာမွ မျဖစ္ပါဘူးဟုထင္ျမင္တတ္ၾကကာ ေဆးျဖစ္ဝါးျဖစ္ဟုပင္ ေခါင္းစဥ္ႀကီးႀကီးတပ္ၾကသည္ ။ အရက္ေလး တစ္ခါတေလပဲေသာက္တာ က်န္တာအားလံုးေကာင္းတဲ့ လူေကာင္းတစ္ေယာက္ပါဟုဆိုတတ္ၾကသည္ ။ သို႔ေသာ္ ထိုအရက္ကေလးကပင္ က်န္တာအားလံုးကို အေကာင္းမွအဆိုးသို႔တျဖည္းျဖည္း ေျပာင္းလဲသြားေစတာကို သတိမမူမိၾကေပ ။
ဘာသာေရးရႈေထာင့္မွၾကည့္လၽွင္ ..အရက္ေသာက္ျခင္းသည္ ငါးပါးသီလမွ တစ္ပါးကိုက်ဴးလြန္ျခင္းျဖစ္သည္ ။ သို႔ေသာ္ ထိုတစ္ပါးတည္းကပင္ က်န္ေလးပါးကို က်ဴးလြန္မိေအာင္ လွံု႔ေဆာ္ေပးႏိုင္သည္ ။
အရက္သည္လည္း စိတ္ကိုေျပာင္းလဲေစႏိုင္ေသာမူးယစ္ေဆးဝါးတစ္မ်ိဳးျဖစ္သည္ ။ အရက္ေၾကာင့္ မူလစိတ္ေပ်ာက္ေသာအခါ ခိုက္ရန္ျဖစ္ပြားၿပီး လူသတ္မိသည့္အခါ ပါဏာတိပါတကံကို အလိုအေလၽွာက္ခ်ိဳးေဖာက္မိၿပီးသားျဖစ္မည္ ။ မိန္းမကိစၥကို ဝါသနာမပါသည့္တိုင္ ၾကံဳႀကိဳက္ပါကက်ဴးလြန္မိႏိုင္မည္ ။ စိတ္အေျခအေနေျပာင္းကာ မိသားစုဝင္မ်ားကိုျဖစ္ေစ မေျပာသင့္တာေျပာမိ မလုပ္သင့္တာလုပ္မိမည္ ။ အရက္၏ ေနာက္ဆက္တြဲျပသနာမ်ားကားေျပာ၍မကုန္ႏိုင္ေပ ။
သို႔ေသာ္ ယေန႔ေခတ္တြင္ လူေတာ္ေတာ္မ်ားမ်ားသည္ ရံဖန္ရံခါအရက္ေသာက္ျခင္းကိုပင္ ေခတ္မွီေသာ ကိစၥတစ္ခုဟုသတ္မွတ္ကာ မေသာက္ဖို႔တားျမစ္သူ ၊သူငယ္ခ်င္းမ်ားကေသာက္၍ကိုယ္ကမေသာက္လၽွင္ပင္ ေခတ္ေနာက္က်၍ ေခတ္မမွီအျမင္မက်ယ္သူဟု ယူဆတတ္ၾကျပန္သည္ ။
အရက္ေသာက္ျခင္းကိုမႏွစ္သက္သူသည္ အရက္အေၾကာင္းကို ဥာဏ္မမွီသူမဟုတ္ ၊ အရက္ေသာက္သူမ်ားကသာ အရက္ကိုလက္မခံႏိုင္သူ၏ အေတြးအေခၚစံခ်ိန္စံႏႈန္းကို ဥာဏ္မမွီႏိုင္ျခင္းျဖစ္သည္ ။
အမွန္တကယ္ေတာ့ အရက္ေသာက္ျခင္းေၾကာင့္ျဖစ္ပြားတတ္ေသာျပသနာမ်ားသည္ ..တိုက္ရိုက္ျဖစ္သည္မဟုတ္ဘဲ သြယ္ဝိုက္ျဖစ္ပြားၾကသျဖင့္သာ အရက္ကို တိုက္ရိုက္စြပ္စြဲဖို႔ခက္ခဲျခင္းျဖစ္သည္ ။
အခါတစ္ပါးက ME ဘြဲ႕ရ ပညာတတ္ အရာရွိတစ္ေယာက္သည္ အရက္ကိုႀကိဳက္၍ေသာက္၏ ။ သူ႔တြင္ ထိုအရက္ေသာက္တာေလးသာ ရွိလ်က္တျခားဘာမွအျပစ္မရွိ မိသားစုအေပၚ တာဝန္ေၾကေသာေယာက်ာ္းေကာင္းတစ္ေယာက္ ၊ မိန္းမႏွင့္ကေလးမ်ားကို ခ်စ္တတ္ အႏြံတာခံတတ္ေသာေယာက်ာ္းတစ္ေယာက္ျဖစ္သည္ ။
ဇနီးျဖစ္သူကလည္း သူ႔ေရွ႕တြင္မေသာက္ဖိုသာတားႏိုင္ပီး ကြယ္ရာမွာမေသာက္ဖို႔မတားႏိုင္ရွာေခ်။သို႔ေသာ္ .. ေနျပည္ေတာ္သို႔ အစည္းအေဝးသြားသည့္အခါ အေပါင္းအသင္းမ်ားႏွင့္အတူေသာက္ၿပီး တစ္ေယာက္တည္းဆိုင္ကယ္ႏွင့္အျပန္တြင္ ေျမာင္းထဲသို႔ျပဳတ္က်ကာ မနက္လင္းအားႀကီးက်မွရဲကေတြ႕သည့္အခါ အသက္မရွိရွာေတာ့ေပ ၊ ဘယ္ေလာက္ႏွေမ်ာစရာေကာင္းသနည္း ။ အရက္ႏွင့္အသက္ကို လဲလွယ္ရရွာေလသည္ ။
တစ္ခါတစ္ရံ၌တခ်ဳိ႕ေသာအရက္ေၾကာင့္ျဖစ္သည့္ျပသနာမ်ားသည္ လူသိရွင္ၾကားထြက္ေပၚမလာတတ္ ။ အရက္ကို အလြန္အမင္းႀကိဳက္သူသည္ မိန္းမအေပၚစိတ္ဝင္စားမွာေလ်ာ့နည္းတတ္သျဖင့္ .. ဇနီးမယားက ထြက္ေပါက္ရွာသာယာမႈရွာသြားၿပီး အိမ္ေထာင္ၿပိဳကြဲရသည္မ်ားလည္းရွိတတ္ျပန္သည္ ။
အရက္ႀကိဳက္ေသာ ေယာက်ာ္းအမ်ားစုသည္ .. ဒီတစ္ခုပဲလုပ္တာ က်န္တဲ့တာဝန္မပ်က္ကြက္ဘူးဟု ကာဘာယူေလ့ရွိၾကသည္ ။ ေယာက်ာ္းတို႔ျပဳအပ္သည့္ အဆင္တန္ဆာတစ္ခုဟုယူဆလိပ္ျပာလံုတတ္ျပသည္ ။
သို႔ေသာ္မည္မၽွပင္ စည္းကမ္းတက်ေသာက္သည္ျဖစ္ေစ.. ထိုသို႔ေသာက္ျခင္းေၾကာင့္မိသားစုဝင္တစ္ဦးဦး စိတ္ဆင္းရဲၿပီဆိုလၽွင္ ထိုသူသည္ မိသားစုအေပၚစိတ္ပိုင္းဆိုင္ရာ abuse လုပ္ျခင္းပင္ျဖစ္သည္ ။
တစ္ခါတရံတြင္ မိဘျဖစ္သူ၏ အရက္ေသာက္ျခင္းကို သားသမီးျဖစ္သူက မႏွစ္မ်ိဳ႕ေသာ္လည္းတားျမစ္ဖို႔အားမတန္၍ ငံု႔ခံ ေနရလၽွင္လည္း သားသမီးအေပၚ စိတ္ပိုင္းဆိုင္ရာ abuse လုပ္ျခင္းျဖစ္သည္ ။
အရက္သမားတခ်ိဳ႕သည္ မိသားစုအေပၚတြင္ ငါကနင္တို႔ကို ဒါေတြ ဒါေတြ လုပ္ေပးထားတာ ဒါ့ေၾကာင့္ ငါအရက္ေသာက္တာေတာ့ နင္လက္ခံရမယ္ ဆိုသည့္ သေဘာထားမ်ိဳးႏွင့္ အၾကပ္ကိုင္ေလ့ရွိတတ္ၾကသည္ ။
မိသားစုလိုအပ္ခ်က္ကိုျဖည့္ဆည္းေပးထားသျဖင့္ သူတို႔ ၏ေပ်ာ္ရႊင္မႈကိုမပိတ္ပင္ရဟူေသာ သေဘာထားမ်ိဳးလည္းရွိတတ္ၾကရာ မိသားစုဝင္မ်ားသည္ ထိုလုပ္ရပ္ကို လက္ခံႏိုင္သည္ျဖစ္ေစ လက္မခံႏိုင္သည္ျဖစ္ေစ ေအာင့္အည္းသည္းခံၾကရရွာသည္ ။
ယခုအခါ ေတာအရပ္ေဒသတို႔တြင္ အရည္အေသြးမမွီေသာ အရက္မ်ားကိုေသာက္သံုးရင္းအသက္တိုၾကရရွာၿပီ။ ဘဝမ်ားစြာ ပ်က္ရရွာၿပီ ။
သို႔ေသာ္ မည္သို႔ပင္ျဖစ္ေစကာမူ အရက္ဆိုေသာအရာကေတာ့ေရာင္းေကာင္းျမဲ ေရာင္းေကာင္းဆဲ ။

The Role of Burmese expatriates

As responsible Democracy activists living overseas we need to be especially aware of the fact that we have the undeniable duty to support the activists struggling inside the country. As individuals or as a whole group we enjoy unrestricted freedom under the sun. Despite such freedom, an ailment called divisiveness plagues the democratic groups that are based overseas. Because of it actions and plans that needed to be carried out in a cooperative fashion by all the groups never achieved a momentum needed to create change in Burma. What needs to be done today to help the movement inside Burma is for us living overseas to become more united and to fight towards a single identifiable goal.

It is time for us to do a merciless self-examination. What most of us will find is that we lack self-reliance and we have no confidence in our own people to achieve their goal. It has been going on long enough that we have always demanded others to help us do what we need to do for ourselves. If we stop and think we pretty soon realize that there are not many things in life that gets done efficiently/timely or even at all if we just rely on others to do things for us. We cannot afford to wait any longer for the US or the International community to intervene on our behalf. The main driving force lies waiting untapped inside the country in the form of people’s power. We need to establish the fact amongst us that People’s power is the only path towards democracy. After establishing such foundation we then need to plan to how to best use such power. We need to admit to ourselves that just by sitting around nothing will get done.
We all have witnessed the selfless sacrifices that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had made over the years for the country. As responsible persons, there is an urgent need to realize that we can not afford any longer to wait for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to bring us Democracy right to our doorsteps but instead each and everyone of us have the obligation to do our best to achieve the ultimate goal of Democracy in Burma.

Dear all Burmese Canadians and friends of Burma,

As we all know, Burma’s Union Election Commission has already announced that the Burma Multi-party General Election will be held on Sunday, 8^th November 2015. This upcoming election is the best opportunity for the people of Burma to elect their own representatives. But there is no guarantee that the Burmese military will allow free and fair elections.

This is the time for collective action for all Burmese Canadians and friends of Burma. We should 

not miss this opportunity. Because, we may never have this chance again.

I  sent letters to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Foreign Minister Robert Nicholson, and PFOB Chair Bruce Stanton requesting to send Canadian Observers for 2015 Burma Election. I received very favorable responses from them as well.

I am sharing the following message (excerpt from my article written two years ago.

၃။ဒီမိုကေရစီနိုင္ငံတည္ေဆာက္ေရးလမ္းေၾကာင္းတြင္ပိတဆုိ႕ေနတဲ့၂၀၀၈ခုဖဲြ႕စည္းပုံအေျခခံဥပေဒျပင္ဆင္ေရးကိုျပည္သူလူထု၏စုစည္းညီညြတ္မႈအင္အားအျပည့္အဝရယူၿပီးအျမန္နိုင္ဆုံးစုေပါင္းေဆာင္ရြက္ရန္
